There is absolutely no justification for removing 32bit support from the OS other than to help their own interests, most likely to do with orphaning older applications and drivers to enable them to switch to a fully Arm compatible OS soon. They are making it very difficult to remain on older OS unless you literally isolate a machine frozen in time, and hope it never breaks. On top of this, if you use the machines in any general capacity with stuff like iCloud etc, Apple is forcing you on by updating phones and ipads too to IOS13, which requires Catalina on your computers to access the same iCloud data.

If you have a machine or two that you rely on, and they break down at all, you are forced to either shop around for 2nd hand one and pray that it works, or you have to buy a new one, and if you look at apple's refurb store, you'll notice that they update all the machines to the newest OS, so they will come with Catalina, and being that it comes with firmware updates for many of the machines, they won't be possible to restore back to Mojave. There's a problem with this 'I'll just stay on x' plan. As a developer, needing Xcode and the newest features that work only on Catalina. What are the things I use in Catalina? Mostly the stuff that was updated to keep pace with iOS 13. For hardware manufacturers I'm sure its a bigger deal, especially if they were using kernel drivers. Many of the warnings I saw were along the lines of "we haven't tested enough yet", not "it won't work".
I suspect for most of those companies the stuff works but they haven't fully tested yet. Most likely because there is some 32-bit piece in there (installer I have to assume not sure).Īnd while everyone in the Mac audio world keeps going on about all the companies making warnings.

Funny enough the System-8 driver, which won't install properly under a fresh install of Catalina, works when an upgrade was done to Mojave. I hope that everyone at least makes an informed decision and weighs the pros and the cons. 0 version, especially in the audio world, is not without its pitfalls For some it won't be an issue at all.
So just out of curiosity - what are these things - I mean, that you actually use? Describe something that would tempt me to update.Yes, I agree with you that. The fact that we are the final round of guinea pigs is quite evident. The cynicism of the OS developers is quite evident. You can hardly say that pouncing on the ".0" version of anything is without its pitfalls. It works on individual dev machines, so now we just need an extra script which does an extra step or two and puts two installers into our downloads."Thats your idea of a "s**t storm"?Ĭonsider it a remark born of bitter sarcasm, then We're setting up a parallel build system with the latest toolchain.

We'll keep later up for a year or two before we finally switch to 64 bit only. Hence, we're going to run a dual approach where our downloads will have new, absolutely safe installers and plug-ins, and an installer with software made from the old toolchain, which contains 32-bit plug-ins.
But it will very likely stop working next year, when that lenient phase is over. Now, because the beta of Catalina is "lenient" for the time being, our stuff simply worked and thus we thought we're good. That relatively new toolchain doesn't do 32 bit at all *gulp* Stuff needs a special "hardened runtime" thing which is available only from a relatively new toolchain. "What was a bit out-of-the-blue for us was the realisation that having 64 bit alone doesn't cut it.
